The coronavirus (Covid19) has turned our lives upside down. We are suddenly slowed down. The situation generates anxiety. This period of historical confinement inspired me to challenge myself in the kitchen to keep myself active and stimulated.
What an untypical situation! Some are more vulnerable because of their age or condition. Others work in health or emergency services and are exposed to risks. Without forgetting the workers and entrepreneurs who deal with important financial issues. Whatever the reason, the pandemic is causing some stress. It also poses a major challenge for most parents: entertaining children every single day. Kids who can’t see their friends or go out! If you’re like me and want to keep them entertained away from their video games, here are 5 challenges you can take up to have fun and learn in the kitchen. They can be adapted to toddlers and adults can participate!
Challenge and recipes for kids
Challenge 1: bake half a recipe
Maths first than cooking! For this project, why not try the dairy-free oatmeal blueberry muffins? They are delicious!

Unlimited toppings! For this project, discover several smoothie recipes, with or without dairy products.

Challenge 3: cook with a scale and play How much does it weight?
For this challenge, homemade granola is perfect!

Challenge 4: open a restaurant, create a yummy and healthy menu, craft the menu, cook and serve the guest!
Big project! Invite older children to consult the Canadian food guide. Why not name the restaurant and make a centerpiece for the occasion!

Challenge 5: improvise a meal with 5 chosen ingredients.
Each participant has the same 5 ingredients. No peeking! Build a barricade or take turns taking the challenge.
Here is a proposal of ingredients:
- eggs
- cheese
- flour
- milk
- tomatoes
What will be the results? You could get dessert for supper! Who knows what the ingredients will inspire you!
